Happy female patient at the dental office

Wondering how long it takes to get a dental implant? For most patients, the full process takes three to nine months from the first consultation to the final crown, though a single-tooth implant with healthy existing bone can sometimes move faster. The timeline depends on a few personal factors, including bone density, whether an extraction is needed first, and how your body responds to healing, so no two patients are the same.

At Godley Station Dental, we know that waiting for a permanent solution to a missing tooth can feel like it drags on, especially when you are ready to move forward with treatment. Our team walks you through every step of the dental implant process so you always know what to expect next, and we design your treatment around a calm, peaceful experience rather than rushing you through appointments.

The First Consultation And Planning Phase

Your journey toward dental implants starts with a consultation, where we evaluate your oral health, take detailed images, and map out a treatment plan suited to your needs. This visit typically takes place in a single appointment and may include a scan to assess bone density in the area where the implant will go.

If you have enough healthy bone to support an implant, we may be able to move to placement fairly soon after this visit. If a tooth needs to be removed first, or if bone grafting is recommended to build up the site, this early phase can add extra time before the implant itself is placed.

Why Some Patients Need Bone Grafting

Not everyone needs bone grafting, but when they do, this step usually adds two to four months to the front end of the process. Bone grafting helps rebuild areas where bone has thinned, often because a tooth has been missing for some time. Once the graft heals and integrates with the surrounding bone, we can proceed with implant placement. Patients without this need can often skip straight to placement.

Implant Placement And The Healing Period

Once your mouth is ready, we place the titanium implant post into the jawbone during a single outpatient procedure. This is often what patients worry about most, but it’s usually far more comfortable than expected, and most people return to normal activities within a few days.

The real waiting period comes next. Your jawbone needs time to fuse around the implant through a process called osseointegration, and research published by the National Institutes of Health has found that this healing period generally exceeds three months before the implant is stable enough to support a permanent crown. Lower jaw implants tend to integrate a bit faster than upper jaw implants because of differences in bone density.

This healing window is where patience matters most, but it is also where the strongest, most stable results come from. We check in during this period to confirm everything is progressing the way it should.

Placing The Abutment And Final Crown

Once your implant has fully integrated, we attach a small connector piece called an abutment, which links the crown to the implant post. In many cases, we can place this during a brief follow-up visit, and your gum tissue typically heals around it within a couple of weeks.

From there, we take impressions to design a custom crown that matches the shape, size, and shade of your surrounding teeth. This step usually takes two to three weeks while your crown is crafted, and once it arrives, we attach it during a short final appointment. At this point, your new tooth looks and functions like the rest of your smile, and most patients say the wait was well worth it for a result built to last for years.
